business away from Yaletown's big
warehouses and the area declined,

ing designers, artists, and adventurous
business people brought the area back
to life during the 1990s. Today, it is one
of Vancouver's trendiest and poshest
neighbourhoods.

WEST SIDE
The posh residential neighbourhoods
of Kitsilano and West Point Grey,
numerous museums, the University of
British Columbia (UBC) campus and
several sand and quartz beaches, from
which Vancouver Island is visible on a
clear day, make Vancouver's West Side
a lively and enjoyable area.
Located at the mouth of False Creek,
Granville Island was created in
1914 for industrial purposes. In 1977,
the artifi cial island's warehouses and
factories were transformed into a ma-
jor recreational and commercial centre.
The Granville Island Market is a
defi nite must-see. The market is a feast
for all the senses: there are stalls of ori-
ental orchids, fi shmongers with salmon
in every shade of red, focaccia and fi g-
and-anise loaves at the wonderful Terra
The Vancouver Museum stands in
the heart of Vanier Park. This delight-
ful museum, whose dome resembles
the head-dress worn by members of
the Coast Salish First Nation, presents
