Summer Activities
HIKING
Some parks have long trails that require
more than a day of hiking and lead
deep into the wild. When taking one
of these trails, which can stretch doz-
ens of kilometres, it is crucial to respect
all signs. There are maps that show the
trails and the locations of wilderness
campsites and shelters.
Accessible to most everyone, hiking is
an activity that can be enjoyed in all na-
tional and most provincial parks. Before
setting out, you should plan your excur-
sion well by checking the length and
level of diffi culty of each trail.
To make the most of an excursion, it
is important to bring along the right
equipment. You'll need a good pair of
walking shoes, appropriate maps, suf-
fi cient food and water and a small fi rst-
aid kit containing a pocket knife and
bandages.
BICYCLING
Visitors can go bicycling and mountain
biking all over Western Canada, along
the usually quiet secondary roads or
the trails crisscrossing the parks. The
roads offer prudent cyclists one of the
most enjoyable means possible to tour
these picturesque regions. Keep in
mind, however, that distances in these
vast provinces can be very long.
Mountain biking trails have been cre-
ated in a number of parks. The parks'
information centre can provide infor-
mation about these.
