CANOEING
Whether you decide to stretch out
on the white sand of Long Beach
on Vancouver Island, or prefer the
more family-oriented atmosphere of
Qualicum Beach, with its calm waters,
or Wreck Beach, the driftwood-carv-
ers' rendez-vous, you'll discover one of
Western Canada's most precious natural
attractions, British Columbia's Pacifi c
Coast. Swimming is not always pos-
sible, however, because of the heavy
surf and cold water temperatures of the
North Pacifi c.
Many parks are strewn with lakes and
rivers which canoe-trippers can spend
a day or more exploring. Wilderness
campsites have been laid out to ac-
commodate canoers during long excur-
sions. Canoe rentals and maps of pos-
sible routes are usually available at the
parks' information centres. It is always
best to have a map that indicates the
length of the portages in order to de-
termine how physically demanding the
trip will be. Carrying a canoe, baggage
and food on your back is not always
