ago. The Haida are known to this day
for their high-quality handicrafts and
beautiful works of art.
The Queen Charlotte Islands are also a
great bird-watching destination, as they
are home to the largest concentration
of peregrine falcons in North America.
Great herons and bald eagles, further-
more, are as common a sight around
local villages as pigeons are in the big
cities to the south.
THE QUEEN
CHARLOTTE ISLANDS
(HAIDA GWAII)
The Queen Charlotte Islands archipel-
ago consists of 150 islands of various
sizes. Almost all of the urban areas are
located on the largest one, Graham
Island, to the north. Moresby Island
is the second most populous. Here,
visitors will fi nd two villages, Sandspit
and Alliford Bay, as well as the amazing
Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve.
Graham Island
Skidegate is the fi rst place you'll
see if you take the ferry to the Queen
Charlotte Islands, since the landing
stage is located at the edge of the vil-
lage. Skidegate is a small Haida com-
munity of 470 inhabitants, located on
the beach in the heart of Roonay Bay.
While you're here, make sure to visit
the internationally renowned Haida
Gwaii Museum , devoted exclu-
sively to articles made by the Haida
over the ages, up until the present day.
The jagged relief of the Queen Charlotte
and San Christoval Mountains has al-
ways protected the east coast from the
westerly storms. Despite the weather,
the Haida, who already inhabited the
archipelago, established living areas
on the west coast some 10,000 years
