Working with Report
Builder 3.0
Report Builder 3.0 is feature-rich reporting tool with the latest Microsoft Office look
and feel (the ribbon). Report Builder 3.0 supersedes its predecessors (Version 1.0 and
2.0) and it was launched with SQL Server 2008 R2. It provides an extremely flexible
GUI with user-friendly wizards, a versatile construct for creating the tablix (table +
matrix) data regions, tables, matrices, charts, gauges, data bars, sparklines, maps,
and so on.
Report Builder is an authoring tool for creating reports that can be deployed to
native mode report servers as well as SharePoint integrated mode report servers.
As it can be used for both modes of the server, reports can be easily accessed on
one, modified, and deployed to the other, offering a high degree of flexibility. While
Report Builder can create embedded data sources from a variety of vendor products,
shared data sources can be created only by using the Report Manager, SharePoint
sites, or the SQL Server Data Tools.
Report Builder 3.0 supports server resources such as shared data sources, works
with SQL Server data sources, XML data, and many third-party products, and can
directly open and edit server-hosted reports. Report Builder together with Report
Manager provides powerful support for building and managing a bewildering array
of report types with stunning graphic and interactive support. The ad-hoc reporting
capabilities are moved over to SharePoint with SQL Server 2012.
Report Builder cannot be used for authoring Power View Reports, a new feature of
SQL Server Reporting Services 2012 in SharePoint Integrated mode.
