− paratextual (or “basic”) analysis;
− thematic analysis (of the content);
− audiovisual analysis;
− pragmatic analysis.

However, there are several additional forms of analysis which attempt to give a
fuller account of the different interests and objectives of the stakeholders in the
analysis of an archive. Thus, for example, we have identified:
− the type of analysis relying on different angles (i.e. combining audiovisual,
thematic, pragmatic, etc. interests in a single analysis);
− the type of specialized analysis such as cultural analysis (i.e. analysis of the
cultural preconceptions which are behind a particular shot or a particular part of a
source video) or indeed indicial analysis , in the sense of the Italian historian
Carlo Ginzburg (i.e. a particular visual object as an indicator for a particular
figurative meaning [GIN 86]).
