Follow the Peak Circle Walk along Lugard and Harlech roads for impressive views of
Hong Kong, the coastline and the islands in 45 minutes. The view is especially stunning at
night. If you're up to a climb, take the Governor's Walk , which winds up to the attractive
Victoria Peak Gardens . They used to belong to the governor's mountain lodge, but the
building was demolished by the Japanese during the war.
From the lower terminal of the Peak Tram, it's a short stroll along Upper Albert Road to
Government House , which was home to 25 of the 28 colonial governors, and is now the of-
ficial residence of the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Leung Chun-ying. Across from the
mansion, the Zoological and Botanical Gardens 9 [map] (gardens: daily 5am-10pm, zoo:
6am-7pm; free) appeals more for its botany than its animal collections and provides a wel-
come oasis.

From 6am to 10am the Central Mid-Levels Escalator ferries commuters from the Mid-
Levels apartment complexes downhill to Central, then it runs uphill from 10am to midnight,
giving a bird's-eye view of street life in Central. The escalator travels above Cochrane Street
to Hollywood Road, passing a colourful outdoor 'wet market' along Gage Street and Gra-
ham Street, first established here in the 1840s, selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and live
fish.
