Red-cockaded Woodpecker
Harrell Prairie Hill Botanical Area
Take Forest Road 518 (which is dirt) east from SH 501 for 2 miles to an open area along
the top of a hill. This is an area managed to preserve the unique plant life that represents some
of the prairie that once existed throughout more of this part of Mississippi. The area is burned
in the late winter, and early April provides a very pretty show of wildflowers. With the open
spaces, this is a good area to watch for hawks and eastern bluebirds. There is no parking area;
pull off the road as best you can. The road is wide enough here to allow even a large truck to
pass if a car is parked on the side.
