In-Depth Information
Other species of woodpeckers are also common in Bienville Pines, as well as pine
warblers. However, other than the good sightings of red-cockaded woodpeckers, the birding
here has never been very prolific for me.
To reach Bienville Pines Scenic Area, take exit 88 off I-20, and go north on SH 35. After
just 0.1 mile, a road goes right (east) to connect with SH 501. This road's intersection with
SH 35 has a Day's Inn and a Shell station on the northeast corner; there is a Best Western
on the southeast corner. In less than a mile, this road dead-ends into SH 501; SH 501 is not
marked here; turn left (north). In 0.2 mile, Forest Road 518 turns off to the right; this is the
way to Harrell Prairie (see next section). In another 0.4 mile going north on SH 501, the park-
ing area for Bienville Pines is on the right; a church is immediately across from the parking
lot on the west side of the road.
