Figure 20. Seasonal variation of porosity of soil of salt marsh bed of the study area.
Porosity or percent pore space of soil of the salt marsh bed was slightly varied in different
seasons of the study period. The values were ranged from 53.00±1.39 to 56.29±1.94% with a
minimum value (51.39%) found during postmonsoon and a maximum value (58.86%) found
during premonsoon (Appendix A, Figure 20). Variation in the values of porosity between
postmonsoon and winter were significant at p<0.05 (Table 1). Significantly (p<0.05) higher
value in winter & premonsoon and lower value in monsoon was measured in this study.
Porosity of soil negatively correlated with exchangeable Ca& Mg, total N and available P at a
very significant level (P<0.01). Porosity also showed a positive correlation with water table
depth and a negative correlation with dissolved oxygen and bulk density of soil at a
significant level of p<0.05 in the present study.
Exchangeable Ca of soil collected from the field of P. coarctata bed of Fauzderhat coast
was varied from 4.36.±0.20 to 7.70.±0.07 meq/100g in different seasons. The minimum value
(4.00 meq/100gm) for exchangeable Ca was recorded during winter and the maximum value
(7.79 meq/100gm) was recorded during postmonsoon (Appendix A, Figure 21). Variations in
the concentrations of exchangeable Ca between monsoon, postmonsoon, winter and
premonsoon were significant at p<0.05 (Table 1). Significantly (p<0.05) higher value in
postmonsoon and lower value in winter was recorded in this study. Exchangeable Ca showed
a positive correlation with water temperature, dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, tidal
height, inundation period, soil temperature, percentage of sand, bulk density, particle density,
the exchangeable Mg and K, total N and the available P of soil and negative correlation with
water transparency, water table depth, soil salinity, soil organic carbon, organic matter,
percentage of clay, moisture, field water capacity and porosity of soil at a significant level of
p<0.01. Exchangeable Ca also negatively influenced by water salinity at the level of p<0.05
(Appendix B).
