Emerging Trends
Chapter Overview
In this chapter we review major concepts introduced earlier. As the digital age has
emerged, the information transfer processes have changed, and these changes
are examined as trends in the information infrastructure with implications for library
and information professionals and for library and information professional educa-
tion. The chapter concludes with a glimpse into the future of the information infra-
structure.
Summary of Important Concepts
In this topic we have provided a framework for understanding our complex, con-
fusing, and emergent digital world. We provide the reader with a lens for examining,
in a comprehensive manner, our information infrastructure. We also empower the
reader to understand how technology, through the Internet and social media, has
changed communication patterns and our 21st-century culture.
Information Transfer Model
The framework for understanding the vast, global information infrastructure is the
information transfer model: the creation, recording, mass-production, dissemination,
organization, diffusion, utilization, preservation, and discarding of information. The
reader may wish to review a detailed explanation of this model in Chapter 4.
Environmental Context
Each of the stages of information transfer is influenced by environmental factors:
