In-Depth Information
day-to-day living; although we have identified the functions of information, today's
use of the information infrastructure helps those who are using information for
many purposes to better understand their work and view it from a broader per-
spective. An educated information professional has the opportunity to become an
innovator, a collaborator, and a leader during this time of change by embracing the
information infrastructure and by being aware of the elements of the information
transfer cycle.
An example of the emergent paradigm is the new position of the academic lib-
rary change agent, the scholarly communication librarian. This librarian is hired to
bridge the traditional library to that of the 21st century. The objective of the schol-
arly communication librarian is to support a growing research culture, to collabor-
ate, and to bring in service agencies, administrators, and researchers across cam-
pus in support of research and development solutions that support the building of
a scholarly repository and a scalable data infrastructure that enables campus re-
searchers to apply for national research grants. Once the infrastructure is in place,
then cohesive data management plans for data storage, backups, access, and dis-
semination will provide additional benefits for project researchers. It is an exciting
time for libraries and for the information professionals who provide the leadership.
