This model demonstrates where creation, diffusion, and utilization fit into the
disciplines from the traditional academic environment in higher education. Informa-
tion is a valued commodity in every aspect of living in our modern society. As tech-
nology emerges, early adopters take interest and explore possible uses for those
technologies. This then leads to new ways of incorporating technological devel-
opments and digital information into aspects of our everyday life. Once adopted,
a new technology will spur new wants and desires, driving the demands for the
technological innovation and adding to our reliance on digital information uses and
emerging technologies.
In the information and knowledge infrastructure portrayed in this model, the
PhD degree (center of the model) is designed to foster research in order to create
acceptable new knowledge for society, knowledge that is within the acceptable
parameter of a discipline's paradigm. Although think tanks and private-enterprise
research organizations produce new knowledge, that knowledge is often a syn-
