The role of knowledge managers in corporate America may include integrating
archival and records management practices into video instruction files for their
companies. Those librarians in the academy may provide publishing alternatives
and data storage solutions for their researchers, or those involved in the creation
of educational resources may make them openly available on the World Wide Web
or in open-textbook initiatives. Then there are those professionals building local
cultural heritage collections, where historical library materials are taking on a new
digital format, improving discoverability and use of primary resources. We can bet-
ter understand the role of information professionals by examining the “big picture”
of how information is created, disseminated, and diffused in society.
Information and Knowledge Creation
How is information created and diffused in modern society? The complexity of
information transfer is represented in Figure 9.1, the Creation, Diffusion, Utilization
of Information Model (Greer, Grover, and Fowler 2013, 27).
