5. Connect the fan. Plug the fan power connector into the CPU fan connector supplied
onthemotherboard(referto Figure19.10 ) ,whichshouldbeneartheprocessorsocket.
Optionally, some heatsinks use a peripheral power connector for fan power. Route the
fan wires such that they won't interfere with the fan or any other components.
6. Configure the motherboard jumpers (if necessary). Older motherboards used jumpers
to configure processor and bus speeds, while some newer motherboards use jumpers
to configure integrated video. Refer to the motherboard manufacturer's manual to set
the jumpers, if any, to match the CPU you are going to install. In modern systems, the
processor configuration is done via the motherboard BIOS Setup.
Installing Memory Modules
To function, the motherboard must have memory installed on it. Modern motherboards
use DDR2 or DDR3 DIMMs. Usually, you install modules in the lowest-numbered sock-
ets or banks first. Note that multichannel boards perform best if modules are installed
