There's also an excellent walking track along the fire break at the northwestern point of
the island. The path winds its way over several bluffs with lovely panoramas from
Naroba
Point
and looks down on the exclusive
Likuliku Lagoon

scramble down to shimmering
Navutu Beach
and walk east along the north coast all the way
to the southern point of Malolo past Yaro and
Solevu villages
;
if coming from Yaro the track
ascending Naroba Point is difficult to find.

SURFING MALOLO
Surfing
at
Malolo Barrier Reef
is exceptional, with waves up to 5m high, crystal-clear
water and smooth right- and left-hand breaks. The most famous breaks are the left-handers
“Cloudbreak” and “Restaurants”, the right barrel of “Wilkes” and “Desperations”.
One of the best ways to experience them is by visiting the activities hut at
Plantation Is-
land Resort
on Malolo Lailai. Their boat departs every day during high tide (sometimes
twice daily). Choose one of seven breaks, according to the conditions and your level of
ability; the trip takes around four hours (F$70-90).
Other resorts offering boat trips to the reefs include
Castaway Island
and
Mana Island
.
There's also direct access from
Rendezvous Fiji
on the mainland, a twenty-minute drive
south of Nadi.
Note that most of the breaks are at their best in the
morning
before the winds freshen up
and the prime season for monster waves is between April and November. Surfing here is
not for beginners - waves can be huge and, with
sharp coral heads
just a few metres be-
low the surface, any untimely wipeout could lead to severe cuts or grazes.
