Where to Eat
Willemstad is home to dozens of ethnic groups and every
imaginable mix of nationalities. So, it's not surprising that
restaurants serve imported foods from around the world,
which skillful chefs turn into imaginative dishes using local
herbs and spices.
Local fare ( krioyo ) centers around fresh seafood and meats (particularly
goat) accompanied by funchi (boiled cornmeal dish similar to polenta) and
fried bananas or plantains. Other native favorites include kabritu (a goat
stew with delicate spices), aros moro (rice and peas), tutu (a sweet corn-
meal and bean dish), and yuana (stewed iguana). Kadushi (cactus) is
served fried (tasty) and boiled into a slimy soup (not so tasty). The best
place to try these dishes is at lunch in the covered market ( marshe )onthe
Waaigat waterfront in Punda. Sample the karkó (conch) and pastechi
(fried meat pie) or lumpia (fried vegetable pie).
For a sit-down lunch or dinner, all the major hotels have good-to-excellent
restaurants and outdoor cafés. In Willemstad, the waterfront is lined with
sidewalk eateries, and restaurants are tucked into the Waterfort Arches
(behind Fort Amsterdam) on the Punda side and the newly renovated
Riffort on the Otrobanda side.
If you get homesick, duck into a McDonald's, Denny's, Subway, or Pizza
Hut for a fast-food fix. (But, don't admit this to anyone.)
A more exotic choice is the popular rijsttafel (rice table), a terrific Indone-
sian custom of presenting small plates of 10 to 30 or 40 different foods.
Dutch favorites, such as stuffed cheese ( keshi yená ), and Latin dishes,
such as paella, are two types of cuisine you should not miss while on
Curaçao.
