120 rooms and suites
$$$$
This eight-block 65-building village is part-Disney, part old-world ele-
gance and total indulgence. All the rooms and suites are 18th- and 19th-
century Dutch colonial structures restored to UNESCO specifications for
preserved historic buildings. Going a step beyond luxurious, the custom-
crafted furnishings feature hand-carved mahogany beds and armoires,
hand-woven linens, priceless antiques, and bet-you-can't-tell replicas.
Bathrooms are spacious Indian marble hideaways with modern plumbing.
Located in the heart of Otrobanda, a block from the bridge over St. Anna
Bay into Punda, the ultra-secure compound offers quick access to the city.
Two swimming pools, one an eco-pool with a waterfall formed from natural
rocks, are ideal for relaxing after a day of shopping or sightseeing. The spa
and fitness center are outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and fea-
ture massage, personal training, and other services. Scheduled shuttle
service is provided to the nearby beach club, and guests get preferential
treatment at the Blue Bay Golf Course. If you're intent on working, all the
machines and connections are provided in the business center, but your
time can be better spent at the on-site African Museum (see the review on
page 230-34). The two main restaurants (there are five total) are reviewed
in the Where to Eat section, page 272.
You don't have to be newly wed to fall in love with the Indian Bridal Suite.
The 900-square-foot open room is cleverly arranged into bedroom, living
area, and bathroom to ensure complete togetherness and a bit of privacy.
The furniture is silver - real silver. An oversized marriage bed is crafted of
hammered sterling and covered in exquisite bridal linen. Other exquisite
touches include white marble floors, a crystal chandelier, two TVs, a step-
up whirlpool tub, and a separate shower with sterling silver walls.
