In-Depth Information
The best quality T-shirts are found at Bonaire Gift Shop (
717-7210) , a
blue building across from Banco di Carib at #13. They also carry a good
selection of dive watches and underwater cameras.
TIP: The largest grocery store on Bonaire is
Cultimara Supermarket on the square at Kaya
L.D. Gerharts 13, just inland from Kaya Grandi.
Pick up picnic supplies, drinks for car trips, and
condo supplies here. They stock a good supply of
Dutch imports, such as cheese and chocolate. The
in-store bakery makes fresh breads and desserts
daily.
717-8278. Most supermarkets are open
8 am-6 pm, Monday-Saturday. Some mini-marts
are open on Sundays.
Jan Art Gallery at Kaya Gloria 7, northeast of downtown, sells oil, water-
color, and acrylic paintings of Bonaire landscapes, island life, and under-
water treasures by local artists. You can also pick up gift cards, prints, and
crafts. Consider buying The Nature of Bonaire , a $20 video, as a souvenir.
It's a 30-minute presentation of the island, both above and below the
water. Call Janice, the owner, for detailed directions and the exact hours
when the shop will be open. A good time to visit is during happy hour on
Fridays, 5-7 pm.

Cinnamon Art Gallery , on Kaya P.L. Brion, at Kaya Grandi directly
behind Banco di Caribe, is well worth a visit. It's run by The Bonaire Art-
ists Foundation, which is a non-profit group that runs on private dona-
tions and exhibits the work of local artists without pay or commission.
When you buy through them, the entire purchase price goes directly to the
artist. The gallery regularly shows photography, jewelry, paintings and
sculpture, with select artists featured on a rotating basis. Find out what's
currently on exhibit at the website or visit the shop weekdays 9 am-5 pm;
717-7103; www.cinnamonartgallery.org.
Where to Stay
Y ou can choose from super-luxurious to just-the-basics
accommodations at eco-inns, full-service resorts, and
vacation apartment complexes. The majority are on the wa-
ter, but not necessarily on a sandy beach, and many have
full-service on-site dive and watersports facilities, a couple of
restaurants, and at least one freshwater swimming pool. Air-conditioning
(sometimes only in the bedrooms), telephones, and televisions are stan-
dard, but ask when you make a reservation, because some of the best re-
sorts take pride in avoiding noisy distractions in paradise.
