Touring the Island
D
iving is the activity of choice for most visitors to
Bonaire, but the island has a beautiful countryside and
several interesting attractions. Plan to devote a day or parts
of several days to sightseeing.
Getting Oriented
Locals give directions by landmarks, not street names.
This can be a problem if you don't know the island well.
However, Bonaire is only 24 miles long and three to seven
miles wide, so you can't get very lost. The crescent-shaped
island resembles a human bowing at the waist and float-
ing in the Caribbean with feet pointing almost due south
and head jutting toward the west. The wide middle
thrusts a hip-like curve toward the east, and tiny Klein
Bonaire is tucked into its western belly, directly across
from the navel-level capital of
Kralendijk
.
In addition to Kralendijk, there is only one other sizable town,
Rincón
,
and five small villages. Ninety-five percent of the land is undeveloped, and
100% of the surrounding water, including the outer island of Klein
Bonaire, is protected as a Marine Park.
Bonaire's best features are underwater, and it has been a prime diving
destination for more than two decades. However, if you enjoy undisturbed
nature and simple pleasures, there's much to do above water.
Guided Tours
You can get a good overview of the island during a two- to three-hour excur-
sion that stops at the top attractions and cost about $20 per person. Full-
day tours that cover the Marine Park run about $55 per day and include
lunch and a snorkeling break.
