ACCOMMODATION
Almost all of Muang Ngoi's accommodation is in wooden bungalows, many of which have
wonderful river views that make up for their basic interiors. As you head up from the boat
landing you'll be approached by a number of guesthouse owners - it's worth having a look at
what they have to offer, as new places spring up regularly.
Alounemai Down a side alley away from the river, 150m south of the boat landing 020
2386 3255. Though it may not overlook the river, this is one of Muang Ngoi's most atmo-
spheric options. The spacious rooms are set around a lush garden, a nd the o n-site Sky Bar has
a purpose-built pizza oven (though it's not fired up every evening). 50,000K
Lattanavongsa Just up from the boat landing, on the left 020 2236 2444. This is a justifi-
ably popular guesthouse, with four very clean, large rooms in a low wooden bungalow. They
also have a number of newer bungalows at Lattanavongsa 1 set around a palm-and flower-
filled compound, just up the road (100,000K), with proper hot-water showers, though they
lack river views. 80,000K
Lertkeo 350m south of the boat landing 020 7730 5041. With fantastic views across the
river, this new guesthouse is as upmarket as Muang Ngoi gets. The five sturdily built concrete
bungalows feature lovely balconies and immaculate bathrooms with genuinel y hot showers.
The only drawback is that the bungalows are a little packed together. 100,000K
Nicksa's Place 200m south of the boat landing. Tiny, basic thatched bungalows, though the
setting, among beautiful flowers and with gorgeous views of the river, makes it feel a little
special. 50,000K
Ning Ning 15m from the boat landing, up a short path to the left 020 388 0122. With its
neat picket fence, net curtains and crisp, white bed linen, Ning Ning feels a very proper and
orderly sort of place. Tucked away in a shady garden, the immaculate thatched wooden bun-
galows are among the village's biggest and best. Its restaurant perches i n a peerless position
above the river, and the owner's family are chatty and friendly. 120,000K
