SAP ABAP and Java Administration Skills
SAP Basis resources start out in the
ABAP world and pick up Java skills on the job, or start out with SAP Java skills such
as portal administration and pick up ABAP skills. It takes a long time to develop Bas-
is skills in both ABAP and Java administration. Since SAP products can be based on
ABAP, Java, and sometimes dual stack (Example: Solution Manager), a Basis admin-
istrator who is proficient in both stacks is valuable.

SAP Solution Manager Skills
SAP Solution Manager is gaining traction and is be-
coming a valuable skill for Basis administrators. Capabilities in Solution Manager,
such as DBA Cockpit, System Landscape Directory (SLD), CTS Plus, Test Manage-
ment, SAP Landscape monitoring, and diagnostic capabilities of Solution Manager
Diagnostic and Wily Introscope are valuable.

SAP BI/BW Skills
SAP Business Intelligence and Business Warehouse
(BW)-specific Basis skills are also valuable. This skill set requires not only the tradi-
tional Basis skills but also BW skills, such as understanding the BW data model, in-
tegration with other systems such as ERP, and performance tuning skills for BW data
loading and query execution.

SAP Business Objects Administration Skills
SAP has purchased Business Objects
and is integrating it into the SAP BW environments because of its superior dashboard-
ing and reporting capabilities with tools such as Xcelsius and web intelligence. Archi-
tecting, installing, and integrating Business Objects into the SAP Landscapes are
valuable skills.

SAP Technical Architecture Skills
SAP design skills, such as designing the develop-
ment architecture, operations architecture, and execution architecture, are valuable.
These design documents will provide the architecture approach and standards for the
entire SAP infrastructure. Skills such as sizing and capacity planning are valuable as
well.

SAP Process Integration Skills
SAP Process Integration 7.1 architecture and admin-
istration skills are unique and specialized. SAP Basis administration skills in message
troubleshooting, architecting and integrating SLD, planning and implementing soft-
ware logistics for the PI repository and directory objects, performance tuning of mes-
sage flow through the integration server, and end-to-end message monitoring and
troubleshooting failed messages are valuable skills.

SAP SRM Skills
SAP Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) started using the
Master Data Management (MDM) catalog, and we are seeing more implementations
in this area. Basis skills such as installing and administering the SRM portal and
MDM catalog are valuable skills.
