SAP Heterogeneous System Copies
In this chapter we will study the second type of system copy: the heterogeneous system copy.
A heterogeneous system copy is also called an OS/DB migration, or operating system/data-
base migration. Because of the complexity and importance of the migration project, SAP re-
commends that the migration be performed by a SAP-certified OS/DB migration consultant.
This is particularly applicable for production system migrations.
Heterogeneous System Copy
During a system copy, if the underlying database, or operating system, or both are changed it
is referred to as a heterogeneous system copy. The complexity of the heterogeneous system
copy will depend on several factors, namely the size of the database, if both operating system
and database are changed, and if the physical location of the systems is also moved during
this process. An experienced migration-certified consultant who has performed several pro-
jects will be able to help guide you through the project and reduce the business risk.
Reasons for Performing a Heterogeneous System Copy
The following are the main reasons for performing a heterogeneous system copy. Sometimes
a combination of reasons will justify or mandate a migration project.
• Enterprise operating system or database standards have been changed for strategic reas-
ons by the information technology business leadership, and all SAP systems have to be
migrated to the new operating system.
• In some instances, both the operating system and database standards have changed and
a SAP migration effort is needed.
• Sometimes the datacenter-hosting location or contracting terms are changed or new
hosting deals are negotiated for strategic reasons. The hosting provider may need a
one-time migration of SAP systems so that it meets support standards.
• Compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) can initiate a SAP migration project, particu-
larly in the financial services industry.
• Performance and scalability issues can initiate SAP migration projects as well.
