Seogwipo is not all that far from Jeju City—a mere 45 minutes or so by road—but in some
ways seems to exist in a different time. The town itself is a small bucolic outpost clinging
to the rocky coast bordering the East China Sea and surrounded by picturesque peaks, wa-
terfalls, and islets. “Downtown” consists of a few streets that wind down from the outlying
hills toward the harbor, which is usually filled with bobbing fishing and pleasure craft. The
dramatic setting and easygoing air have made it a favorite destination of newlyweds and
day-trippers, and have convinced more than a few people to settle in for the long haul.
It obviously can't compete with Seoul or even Jeju City when it comes to things like
excitement, imported groceries, art galleries, or educational facilities, but with so many re-
sorts and parks as well as a coastline within spitting distance, Seogwipo's got the edge when
