CHEAP EATS AND QUICK SNACKS
The most obvious snack in Prague, sold from kiosks all over the city, is the
párek
, or
hot
dog
,adubious-lookingfrankfurter(traditionallytwo-
párek
meansapair),dippedinmus-
tard and rammed into a white roll (
v rohlíku
). The usual multinational burger chains have
their outlets splattered all over Prague, too.
Prague's
bakeries
(
pekářství
or
pekárna
)are the places tohead fortraditional Czech tarts
(
koláč
- actually from Moravia), traditionally filled with poppy seed jam (
mákový
), plum
jam (
povidlový
) or a kind of sour-sweet curd cheese (
tvarohový
). Traditionally, the Czechs
went in for artistically presented open
sandwiches
known as
chlebíčky
- with combina-
tions of gherkins, cheese, salami, ham and aspic - but nowadays the baguette, panini and
wrap are in the ascendancy. One reliable city-wide chain is
Paneria
(
paneria.cz
)
, which
specializes in providing sandwiches, panini and pastries for hungry office workers; the
most central branches are at
Kaprova 3
and Maiselova 4 (metro Staroměstská). Whatever

some with seating, serving authentic Italian
gelato
.
Markets
and
food shops
, including delis, patisseries, bakeries and ice-cream shops, also
offer rich pickings when it comes to snacking.
