Kids'Park(Kölyökpark) II, Mammut 2 (shop 328), Lövőház utca 1-5 1 345 8512; Széll
Kálmán tér to Rózsadomb . Indoor play area (for ages 1-11) in a city mall that comes into its
own on wet days. You pay 800Ft for half an hour's use of slides, climbing walls and more -
parents can leave the kids here while they go shopping. Mon-Sat 10am-9pm, Sun 9am-8pm.
Margit-sziget The island in the Danube is a great open space where you can rent bikes, ped-
aloes and electric cars (from the northern end of the island, though it is worth asking on the
island, as the hire points move around). The Palatinus lido has a wave machine and lots of
small pools for kids - there have been issues about locker security here, so don't take all your
valuables. The petting zoo across on the eastern side has been vastly improved, and the var-
ied scenery and open areas for frisbee and ball games all create a very pleasant atmosphere.
Playgrounds There are a lot of playgrounds in the squares and parks, such as the Károlyi
kert, with the longest sandpit in town, near the Astoria (Belváros), Szabadság tér
(Lipótváros), Szent István park (Újlipótváros), Klauzál tér (Erzsébetváros), on the Margit-
sziget and at several locations in the Városliget, one of the best being near Dembinsky utca,
while in Buda you can find them at the Millenáris Park near Széll Kálmán tér, on the Gellért-
hegy and at the Feneketlen tó (see map ) .
Tropicarium You can get close to the sharks, feed stingrays and experience the rainforests in
this huge aquarium-terrarium in southern Buda.
Városliget The park has the largest concentration of activities and attractions for children:
playgrounds, the zoo , a circus and a fairground. The Széchenyi Baths are popular with bigger
children - especially the large outdoor hot pool and the whirlpool - but it's not a great place
for splashing around in as the old ladies don't want their hairdos messed up. For those who
prefer to stay above water level, there's also rowing in summer and ice-skating in winter on
the lake by Hősök tere.
Zoo (Állatkert) With its visionary director, the zoo gets better every year. The latest devel-
opment isthenewOnce UponaTime Parkinthe groundsoftheformer Funfair (Vidámpark):
kids can stroke the animals in the petting farm, ride ponies or go on the grand old Carousel.
There'salsothe ZooFunhouse(ÁllatkertJátszóház ; jatekmester.hu ) ,forbabiesandchil-
dren aged up to ten. In addition to a well-constructed activity centre, you get the chance to be
taken by the zookeepers to see the animals being fed. You can enter from the zoo (Mon-Fri
900Ft/hr, Sat-Sun 1100Ft), or from the street entrance between the zoo and the circus Ál-
latkert Játszóház (Mon-Fri 1200Ft/hr, Sat-Sun 1500Ft). Daily 9am-8pm.
