In-Depth Information
MUSEUMS
Hospital in the Rock With gory waxworks, spooky Cold War bunkers and an excellent
guided tour, this could be great fun for kids (especially boys) - but unfortunately you can't
run around or touch anything and admission charges are steep.
Hungarian Open-Air Museum Children's programmes every weekend, a playground and
frequent folk-craft and folk-dancing displays in this museum outside Szentendre.
NaturalHistoryMuseum Full of colour and activity, with interactive games and lots to look
at, plenty of it at child height. Well thought out, it certainly grabs children's attention, but
make sure you take snacks - if the café is closed, there is not much else nearby. Across the
road is the Botanical Garden .
Palace of Miracles This great interactive playhouse has sadly moved to smaller premises
at the Campona Mall but it still has plenty to keep children entertained for an hour or two.
Activities such as the bed of nails and square-wheeled car serve as a back-door way of ex-
plaining scientific principles. Good explanations in English.
RailwayHistoryPark Strong child appeal here: lots of big old engines and carriages, and in
summer you can even drive an engine yourself.
TelephoneMuseum Ahands-onmuseum,whichisararityinBudapest;childrenenjoysend-
ing faxes and calling one another on vintage phones.
Transport Museum Városliget. Vehicles, trams, ships and trains of all kinds, plus model
train sets that run every hour until 5pm. On the first floor of the nearby Petőfi Csarnok is an
Aviation and Space Flight display.

DANCE, THEATRE AND CREATIVE FUN
ThefactthatsuccessfulmusicensemblessuchastheBudapestFestivalOrchestraandthefolk
group Muzsikás hold regular events designed specifically for children says a lot about Hun-
garian attitudes to young people. Budapest also has a strong tradition in puppetry, and many
big Hungarian writers have contributed to its children's repertoire. There are some English-
language performances, but again, puppet shows are good visual entertainment even without
thelanguage. Morningandmatinée performances areforkids.Tickets arealsoavailable from
the ticket offices .

too. The concerts are usually every other month on either a Saturday or a Sunday at 2.30pm
and 4.30pm, Sept-May; tickets cost 2500Ft.
