BUDAPEST JAZZ
When it comes to jazz (or dzsessz , as it is sometimes becomes in Hungarian), don't be
fooled by the small number of regular venues in Budapest. The country boasts some bril-
liant jazz musicians, such as the pianists Béla Szakcsi Lakatos and Kálmán Oláh and the
experimental guitarist Gábor Juhász. It is worth looking out for the HarmoniaJazzWork-
shop ( HarmoniaJazzMűhely ), which holds regular sessions at the BudapestJazzClub .
There are also occasional jazz concerts in the kert bars.

FOLK MUSIC AND DANCE
Hungarian folk music and dancing underwent a revival in the 1970s, drawing inspiration
from Hungarian communities in Transylvania, regarded as pure wellsprings of Magyar cul-
ture. The movement still exists today, and has been extended to other cultures - you'll also
see adverts for Greek ( görög ), Slav, Irish and other dance houses. Visitors are welcome to
attend the gatherings and learn the steps; see tanchaz.hu for more. Apart from the places
detailed here, performances take place at the Music Academy , the Palace of Arts and the A38
and in some of the kert bars such as the Rács Kert .
