LIPÓTVÁROS
Bedő Ház V, Honvéd utca 3 1 269 4622; map . Housed in a gem of a building just north
of Szabadság tér, the café shares the same space as the Museum of Hungarian Art Nouveau,
though it'shard to tell where one begins and the other ends, such is its pleasantly cluttered
nature. A quiet place, and with a fairly modest range of drinks and pastries, it is, nevertheless,
a delightful spot for a coffee break if you're in the neighbourhood. Mon-Fri 8am-7pm, Sat
9am-5pm.
EspressoEmbassy V,AranyJánosutca15 06308649530 espressoembassy.hu ; map .
One of the larger of the new-wave coffee bars - the interior, with its bare brick vaulting, is by
the same team that designed two of the new metro stations. The coffee is exquisite - several
members of the barista team have won awards - and don't miss the cheesecake and pastries,
too. Mon-Fri 7.30am-7pm, Sat 9am-7pm.
Europa V, Szent István körút 7 1 312 2362; map . Large and perennially busy coffee house
a short stroll from the Margit híd, with lots of seating, including a segregated, salon-style
room. Both the coffee and cake is first-rate, though nothing tops the delicious, and very gen-
erously sliced, rétes or flódni . Daily 9am-8pm.
Madal XIII, Hollán Ernő utca 3 1 796 6287, madalcafe.hu ; map . New-wave coffee bar
with a spiritual side - it was inspired by the Indian philosopher Sri Chimnoy, whose child-
hood name was Madal. Coffee aficionados will feel at home here. The friendly capped baris-
tas take their beans very seriously and occasionally run workshops on making the perfect fil-
ter coffee. You can also get soy, vegan chocolate and macaroons. In summer there's a terrace
in the pedestrian street out front. Mon-Fri 7.30am-8pm, Sat 9am-11.30am.
Szalai V, Balassi Bálint utca 4 1 269 3210; map . One of the few remaining old-style
cake shops in Budapest, serving pastries baked on the premises. Beneath its large gilt-framed
mirrors are a few tables where the regulars watch the world pass by. Daily except Tues
9am-7pm, Nov-April closed Mon.
