waters that are great for snorkeling, at the edge of about 19km (12 miles) of secluded
beachfront. There's also access to cookout areas for budgeters who want to barbecue,
flush toilets, and outdoor showers whose privacy is ensured by artfully woven palm
fronds. Lodging comes in the form of seven breezy beach cottages, all equipped with
private kitchenettes and bathrooms. The campground no longer rents tents or bare
sites.

Anegada Beach Cottages A true hideaway, this property consists of three
spread-out and well-furnished cottages standing on 2 hectares (5 acres) of beach-
front. Each of the cottages, equipped with a full bathroom, lies about 15m (49 ft.)
from the water. The cottage cluster opens onto a long curving beach of white sands.
During the day, guests lounge about, snorkel, or go bonefishing. It's the lazy life.

Anegada Reef Hotel The only major hotel on the island is 5km (3 miles) west
of the airport, right on the beachfront. Standing on the site of a resort built in the
1970s that never opened, this is one of the most remote places covered in this guide,
and a favorite of the yachting set, who enjoy the hospitality of the owners who built
the complex by hand. The hotel offers motel-like, very basic rooms with private
porches and either garden or ocean views, plus small bathrooms. Come here for
tranquillity, not for pampering.
You can arrange to go inshore fishing, deep-sea fishing, or bonefishing (there's a
tackle shop). In addition, you can set up snorkeling excursions and secure taxi service
and jeep rentals. There's a beach barbecue nightly; the house specialty is lobster, and
many attendees arrive by boat. If you're visiting the island for the day, you can use the
hotel as a base. Call and they'll have a van meet you at the airport.
Setting Point, Anegada, B.V.I. www.anegadareef.com. &   284/495-8002. Fax 284/495-9362. 16 units.

Where to Eat
Big Bamboo CARIBBEAN On the crescent-shaped Loblolly Bay, this is one of
the best known of the local beach bars and restaurants. If you're cast away on this
island, chances are you will make your way here. Arriving either in a yacht or in a
small boat, day-trippers sample the famous fresh Anegada lobster as well as locally
caught conch. Red snapper and grouper also appear in the day's catch, or you can
order baby back ribs and spicy barbecue chicken. Desserts range from their cheese-
cake to Key lime pie. After all this food and drink, you can chill out in a nearby ham-
mock under a palm.
Loblolly Bay. &   284/499-1680. Reservations recommended for large groups. Main courses $16-$40
lunch, $22-$45 dinner. MC, V. Daily 9am-9pm.
Cow Wreck Beach Bar & Grill WEST INDIAN This laid-back, family-
run, and definitely funky joint is a coveted address among yachties anchoring at
Anegada. Ice-cold beer and the best lobster in the B.V.I. keep patrons coming back.
