Croix Rousse Don't Miss List
BY LISE PEDERSEN, FRENCH TV JOURNALIST
1 MARCHÉ DE LA CROIX
This market fills bd de la Croix Rousse daily (except Mondays) and brims with
fresh produce, including fruit and veg from local farms. There's an organic mar-
ket every Saturday morning at the boulevard's far end.
2 CAFÉ TERRACES
Two stand out for their remarkable view: the terrace at Le Montana ( ht-
tp://restaurantlemontana.fr ) towers over Lyon, offering a splendid panorama of
Fourvière ( Click here ) and the city's two rivers. The other is Le Gros Caillou
(180 blvd de la Croix Rousse), right by the eponymous Gros Caillou (literally 'large
rock'). On a clear day there's an absolutely spectacular view of Mont Blanc, cre-
ating the illusion that the Alps are but a few miles away.
3 LE CRIEUR
On Sunday morning around 11am you can't miss le crieur (town crier), aka born-
and-bred Croix Roussien actor Gerald. Centre stage is place de la Croix Rousse
where he reads out messages, poems and pamphlets people have left in post
boxes at bars and cafés around town during the week. He encourages people to
loosen up, shake each other's hands; he is unique, entertaining and heart-warm-
ing.
