Mont St-Michel Don't Miss List
BY JACK LECOQ, WALKING GUIDE & STORYTELLER EXTRAORDINAIRE
1 THE BAREFOOT WALK
You can wear plastic shoes, but walking the 13km from Bec d'Andaine in Genêts
to Mont St-Michel bare-foot is wonderful. We walk across a mix of pitch sand,
quicksand, sand flats and endless ripple marks made by the tides. At times we're
almost knee-deep in mud.
2 ÎLOT DE TOMBELAINE
After walking for about an hour (3km) this islet, occupied by the English for 35
years (they're very patient) during the Hundred Years' War, pops up. It is now a
bird reserve and, from April to July, full of exceptional birdlife. November to
March, once the birds have left, you can follow a tiny footpath to the top of the is-
let from where an exceptional view of Mont St-Michel unfolds - quite, quite as-
tonishing.
3 ABBAYE DU MONT ST-MICHEL
We cross the River Couesnon, the medieval border between Normandy and Brit-
tany, and there is the Mount. The abbey is marvellous. It has beautiful works of
art and rooms: the hall where pilgrims gathered is magnificent, as is the Salle
des Chevaliers (Knights Hall), where monks spent hours illuminating
manuscripts.
