EL GRILLO AZUL €
(Calle Grillo 1; menú de día €9, meals €15-20; Tue-Sat, lunch only Sun; ) Ve-
getarian visitors to Salamanca have a treat that's rare in Castilian towns - a real-life
vegetarian restaurant. It's a buzzy place with attractive blue-and-white decor and a
creative menu that includes a plato degustación (€11.50): a veritable veggie feast
for two with taster portions of dishes like grilled seitan or tofu, vegetable soufflé,
wild mushrooms and inventive salads.

Salamanca, with its myriad bars and large student population, is the perfect after-
dark playground. Nightlife here starts very late, with many bars not filling until after
midnight. The so-called 'litre bars' on Plaza de San Juan Bautista are fun night-time
hang-outs mainly for students (who clearly have better things to do than hit the
topics).
TÍO VIVO
(Calle del Clavel 3; 4pm-late) Sip drinks by flickering candlelight to a background
of '80s music, enjoying the whimsical decor of carousel horses and oddball antiquit-
ies. There is live music Tuesdays to Thursdays from midnight.

CAFÉ EL CORRILLO
( www.cafecorrillo.com , in Spanish; Calle de Meléndez 18; 8.30am-late) Great for a
beer and tapas at any time, with live music on Friday nights from 11.30pm. The ter-
raza (terrace) out back is perfect on a warm summer's evening.
