communities, we will have some major new challenges to overcome. Perhaps the
most pressing, in light of discoveries that microbial communities may take decades
to recover their diversity, will be to find ways to accelerate changes in the composi-
tion—and hence the function—of microbial communities in agricultural soils. The
availability of large-scale replicated experimental systems reflecting different land
management practices will ensure that the KBS LTER continues to play a pivotal
role in both fundamental and applied aspects of microbial ecology research.
