Adding the Z-Axis Lead Screw
The Z-axis is the only axis that will move (up and down) using a lead screw. (The X and Y axes are each
belt-driven.) Before you go any further with the assembly, it's time to attach the lead screw.
You'll start by inserting the lead screw into the anti-backlash nut (ABN). This can be tricky; you
want the lead screw to screw into the ABN centered perfectly. The lead screw threads will be difficult to
turn initially; the threads are actually going to “cut” into the plastic of the ABN and create a threaded
path (similar to a nut) for the lead screw to move through.
Screw the ABN onto the lead screw as shown in Figure 12-1. You want to have the ABN about two
inches from one end of the lead screw.
