In-Depth Information
9am-10.30pm; ; Fontana)
A French team has created this delightfully chaotic space for indulging in cups of
suïssos
(rich hot chocolate) served with a plate of heavy homemade whipped cream and
melindros
(spongy sweet biscuits), fine desserts and even a few savoury dishes (including crêpes). The
place is strewn with books and the area out the back is designed to keep kids busy, with
toys, books and a blackboard with chalk, making it an ideal family rest stop.
CATALAN
EL GLOP

This raucous eatery is decked out in country Catalan fashion, with gingham tablecloths and
no-nonsense, slap-up meals. The secret is hearty serves of simple dishes, such as
bistec a la
brasa
(grilled steak), perhaps preceded by
albergínies farcides
(stuffed aubergines) or
calçots
(spring onions) in winter. To finish try the
tocinillo,
a caramel dessert. Open until
1am, El Glop is a useful place to have up your sleeve for a late bite.

Wed & Sun, 7am-3am Fri & Sat; Fontana)
The liveliest locale on the square, Nou Candanchú is a long-time favourite for various reas-
ons. Many flock to its sunny terrace just for a few drinks. Accompany the liquid refreshment
with one of the giant
entrepans
(filled rolls) for which this place is famous. Otherwise, it of-
fers a limited range of tapas and reasonable grilled-meat dishes.
SPANISH
EL TOSSAL
1.30-4pm & 8.30-11pm Tue-Sat; Joanic)
A proper old-fashioned, no-frills Catalan restaurant, of the sort in which Gràcia excels, with
tables arrayed around a central bar area and into a low-ceilinged dining annexe. The special-
ity is game and similarly hearty fare - the oxtail stew is excellent, as is the duck magret with
caramelised onions and a port reduction, and there is a short but well-chosen list of suitably
robust wines.
