most other restaurants around town. The menu changes daily but you can choose from the
likes of chicken with apricots, prunes and tamarind sauce, or quinoa salad with baked fennel
and avocado, and finish up with pistachio and lemon drizzle cake. All this prepared with
love and Slow Food principles for an unbeatable price. There are few tables, so arrive early.

You might not notice the modest entrance to this delicious relic, surrounded as it is by cool
hang-outs, Lebanese eateries and grunge bars. Head for the 1950s time-warp dining room
out the back. Serious waiters deliver all sorts of seafood and rice dishes to your table, from
arròs a la milanesa
(savoury rice with chicken, pork and a light cheese gratin) to a
bullit de
lluç
(slice of white hake boiled with herb-laced rice and a handful of clams).

A little neighbourhood secret, hidden away by the Mercat de la Llibertat, La Pubilla special-
ises in
'esmorzars de forquilla'
(literally, 'fork breakfasts'), hearty affairs beloved of the mar-
ket workers and nearby residents. There's also a
menú del día
(daily set menu) for €14,
which includes Catalan dishes such as baked cod, or roast pork cheek with chickpeas. Ar-
rive early for any chance of a table.
TAPAS
EL ROURE
7am-1am Mon-Sat; Fontana)
This old-time locals' bar is what Hemingway meant by a 'clean, well-lighted place'. Sidle
up to the bar or pull up a little wooden chair and tuck into good-value tapas from the bar,
washed down by a few cold Estrellas. The
bunyols de bacallà
are delightful battered balls of
cod that demand to be gobbled up. The place is full to bursting most of the time.
