In-Depth Information
Climbing Guides
For inexperienced climbers, hiring a licensed guide is the best way to approach the mono-
lith. There are about 10 companies licensed to guide climbers on Devils Tower. Among
them is Above All Climbing School & Guides (307/467-5267 or 888/314-5267,
www.devilstowerclimbing.com , guided one-on-one climbs $350/day). The school offers
excellent instruction and guiding through play days, instruction days, and summit days.
Combination specials are available. Other guiding companies licensed to work in the
monument include Above Ouray Ice and Tower Rock Climbing Guides (888/345-9061,
www.towerguides.com , group summit climbs from $225 pp) and Sylvan Rocks Climbing
School and Guide Service (605/484-7585, www.sylvanrocks.com ) , which requires two-
day courses ($620 pp, $440 pp for 3 people) to climb to the summit.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Other than the Belle Fourche Campground, there are no accommodations inside the monu-
ment. The Devils Tower Lodge Bed & Breakfast (just north of the monument, 307/
467-5267 or 888/314-5267, www.devilstowerlodge.com , $150-200) is owned by climbing
guide Frank Sanders and offers comfortable rooms with unparalleled access to the tower.
CAMPING
The only campground in the monument proper is the 50-site Belle Fourche Campground
(307/467-5283, $12), open in the summer season for tent campers and RVs on a first-come,
first-served basis. Running water is available, but there are no RV hookups.
Just outside the monument, the Devils Tower KOA (60 Hwy. 110, 307/467-5395 or 800/
562-5785, www.devilstowerkoa.com ) has RV hookups ($50-60), cabins ($77-115), and tent
sites ($32), plus an on-site heated swimming pool, snack bar, nightly hay rides, and free
Wi-Fi. With the tower looming in the background, the nightly outdoor showing of Close
Encounters of the Third Kind, filmed largely at the campground, is an unforgettable exper-
ience.
FOOD
No food is sold inside the monument, so you will have to bring your own supplies or eat
before you arrive at Devils Tower. There are restaurants and grocery-convenience stores in
Moorcroft (33 miles), Sundance (28 miles), and Hulett (9 miles).
