through sites, cabin price determined by number of guests), offering an ideal forested and
quiet setting that is wonderfully convenient. The nine cabins, reminiscent of the 1930s and
1940s architecture found throughout the park, are especially charming, but they get booked
up quickly and require three- and five-night stays.
For a truly unique experience outside of town, M Yellowstone Under Canvas (890 But-
termilk Creek Rd., 406/219-0441, www.mtundercanvas.com , Memorial Day-Labor Day)
offers “glamping” (glamour-camping) options ranging from modest tipis ($75) and safari
tents ($149-195) to luxury safari suite tents ($395 and up) with king-size beds, private bath
with freestanding tubs, and woodstoves. There are a variety of options, from shared bath-
rooms (the hot water showers are provided by a generator that runs from 6am to 11pm and
is not quiet) to private but separate baths, influencing the price. But all of these tents and
tipis are set in a mountain-ringed meadow with a creek running through. And the bedding is
nothing short of luxurious. The guests here are largely international, and it can be a treat to
listen to campfire or next-tent pillow talk in several different languages. The only downside
is that snoring is universally annoying and with all but the most expensive tents situated so
close together, light sleepers are bound to hear plenty of snorers. Still, this is comfortable
camping without the work.
