CAMPING
Thirteen campgrounds along U.S. Highway 212 offer 226 sites between Red Lodge and
Cooke City. Because of the elevation and volume of snow, many do not open until late June.
Beartooth Lake Campground (21 sites, $15/night) and Island Lake Campground (21
sites, $15/night) are two excellent choices very near the summit. Campsites along the Bear-
tooth Highway are managed by the Custer National Forest (406/446-2103, www.fs.fed.us/
r1/custer ) and range in price free-$20 per night, depending on the site.
FOOD

446-9900, www.eatfooddrinkwine.com , 11am-9pm Tues.-Thurs., 11am-9:30pm Fri.-Sat.,
$9-34) offers its customers a truly unique dining experience without any pretense. From the
layout (the kitchen is open and in the middle of the restaurant) to the menu, it is clear that
the restaurant has an innovative approach to food. The focus is on clean flavors, using local
ingredients and producing delicious results (try the bison-stuffed egg rolls). True to their
name, they also have an excellent selection of wines. Recommendations are made directly
on the menu, pairing each food item with a glass of wine.
For a casual, inexpensive, old-fashioned drive-in—or better yet, walk-up—experience,
head to the Red Box Car (1300 S. Broadway Ave., 406/446-2152, 11am-9pm daily early
Apr.-Sept.). Based in an actual 1906 box car from the Rocky Fork Railway, this stand serves
some of the best shakes, malts, chili, and burgers you could imagine. Sit outside and enjoy
your meal as you take in the views of nearby Rock Creek. Red Box Car may close at any
time due to weather, so call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting.
Attached to the Regis Grocery, and known for outstanding breakfasts and organic, whole
foods, Café Regis (501 S. Word, 406/446-1941, www.caferegis.com , 6am-2pm Tues.-Sun.,
$4-11) is an excellent spot for a hearty, healthy, and very reasonably priced meal. The ser-
vice is quick and friendly, and every delicious item on the menu—from omelets and break-
fast burritos to soup, sandwiches, salads, and mouthwatering daily specials—is available to
go. Grab a ready-to-go picnic lunch or find all the gourmet fixings for whatever adventure
you have planned. The Regis Grocery has a huge selection of organic, gluten-free, and oth-
er specialty products.
Thirty-five miles northeast of town is the tiny hamlet of Fromberg (drive east of Red
Lodge on Hwy. 308 to Belfry, then north on Hwy. 72 past Bridger) and the Little Cowboy
Bar & Museum (105 W. River St., Fromberg, 406/668-9502, noon-2am daily), a rare find.
