erally higher in winter, and particularly around holidays. Navigating the reservation system
can be a feat, so practice patience and be clear about what you want and what your budget
is.
Another sizable full-service resort on the shores of Whitefish Lake and just over a mile
from downtown is the ultra-appealing Lodge at Whitefish Lake (1380 Wisconsin Ave.,
406/863-4000 or 877/887-4026, www.lodgeatwhitefishlake.com , low season from $115,
high season from $249). The lodge is pretty spectacular, and the rooms are all luxurious and
sparkling new. The attached condos are sizable and great for larger groups, but somewhat
less romantic. The immediate lake access is a disincentive to ever leave, and the on-site res-
taurants will keep you well fed and happy.
Smaller options for lodging in the town of Whitefish include the riverfront 15-room
Duck Inn (1305 Columbia Ave., 406/862-3825 or 800/344-2377, www.duckinn.com ,
$179-249) and the charming five-bedroom Garden Wall Inn (504 Spokane Ave., 888/
530-1700, www.gardenwallinn.com , $155-315).
CAMPING
There are quite a few camping options, both public and private, around Kalispell, but noth-
ing for tent campers in town. Among the largest full-service RV parks and the only one
with a heated swimming pool is the shady and private Glacier Pines (120 Swan Mountain
Dr., Kalispell, 800/533-4029, www.glacierpines.com , $32 plus $2 pp), with 80 full-service
sites, free Wi-Fi, a playground for small kids, horseshoes, and fire pits. A good primitive
option for tent campers is the Ashley Lake Campgrounds (North Shore Rd., off Ashley
Lake Rd., 10 miles west of Kalispell, 406/758-5204, www.fs.fed.us/r1/flathead , Memorial
Day-Labor Day, no fees for day use or overnight camping), which offers 11 lakefront sites
with no services other than a vault toilet.
By far the most economical accommodations in Whitefish are the campgrounds. There
are a number of beautiful national forest campgrounds as well as two private campgrounds,
including the Whitefish KOA (5121 U.S. 93 S., 2 miles south of Whitefish, 406/862-4242
or 800/562-8734, www.glacierparkkoa.com , $43 tents, $52-64 RVs, $83-91 cabins, $165
cottage), which has every imaginable amenity. Tally Lake (913 Tally Lake Rd., 17 miles
west of Whitefish, 406/837-2775, www.recreation.gov , late May-late Sept., $25) is a gor-
geous and popular spot with a nice campground. Closer to town, Whitefish Lake State
Park (0.5 mile west of Whitefish on U.S. 93, then 1 mile north on State Park Rd., 406/
862-3991 or 406/752-5501, www.fwp.mt.gov/parks , $15) offers 25 waterfront tent and RV
sites that go quickly at this beautiful, convenient spot.
