In-Depth Information
Drop something (not food) to distract the bear and keep your pack on for
protection in case of an attack. If you have bear spray, grab it and be prepared
to use it in the event of an attack.
Protect yourself if the bear attacks. Protect your chest and abdomen by falling
to the ground on your stomach or assuming the fetal position. Cover the back
of your neck with your hands, and most importantly, do not move until the bear
has left the scene.
Although the lake and surrounding forests are exquisitely serene, the area is a hub of
activity in the summer months for human visitors and the bear population alike. Modeled
after a Swiss chalet and opened in 1914, the grand and slightly worse-for-wear Lake
McDonald Lodge sprawls along the northeast shore and provides relatively expensive
lodging with unmatched views. The dining room, lounge, and pizzeria are open to
nonguests. Stop in to warm yourself by the massive fireplace, check out the animal mounts
that have decorated the place since its origins, or lounge lakeside on the veranda with a
beverage.
