There are many great hiking trails around the lake, including those to Fish Lake, Mount
Brown Lookout, and the mellow Johns Lake Loop. There are plenty of fish in the lake—17
varieties in all, mainly trout. There are also boat tours departing from the lodge as well as
Red Bus Tours and ranger-led activities.
Bowman Lake
Some 32 miles north of the west entrance to Glacier in the North Fork Area, and only
30 miles south of Canada, is Bowman Lake, another crystalline alpine gem ringed with
mountains and forest. A long bumpy ride is required to get here, and as a result it is never
crowded. The density of mosquitoes tends to discourage visitors. But the 7-mile-long lake
is exceptionally beautiful, and the mosquitoes can be avoided to some extent. Boats are
permitted, with restrictions on engines. Kayaks and canoes are a wonderful way to explore
this photogenic setting. The lake is filled with fish, primarily kokanee and cutthroat trout,
and the fishing is legendary, particularly in late spring. There are plenty of worthwhile
