contains two Classic items (A3, B3), only one
Rococo item (B2) and the specification that it does
not contain any Baroque item (¬D1). At first sight,
one might be inclined to assign S3 (“Classic”)
as the “second approach to identification”, while
the experts assigned S2 (Rococo) The reason
was that, for assigning an approach as S3 or S2,
experts were not just looking at S1, S2, S3, S4 as
totally meaningless variables. Rather, they took
into account that the meaning of these symbols
result from the meaning of the symbols A,B,D,E
which meanings, on their turn, depend on X1 to
X23 (and their contraries). A careful consideration
of all chaining
second second-level table
Let us denote by T1, T2, T3 and T4, the expressions
“second approach to identification = Baroque”,
“second approach to identification = Rococo”,
“second approach to identification = Classic”,
“second approach to identification = none of these
styles”. The combinations of the G, C and F, give
rise to the Table 5.
For instance, the first and the last of the 90
second-level production rules corresponding to
Table 5 are:
G1 ^ F1 ^ C1 → T1
G3 ^ F4 ^ ¬ C4 → T3
A
X → B → S
D
E
which, respectively, mean
“IF Baroque qualities = yes AND Baroque

has to be made because the literals X that char-
acterize S can be so relevant that they sometimes
substantially influence the results.
AND Baroque condition = yes
THEN second approach to identification =
Baroque”
