Summary This tramp takes you through the spectacular coastal scenery of the Banks Penin-
sula, which abounds with wildlife and is resplendent with remnant tracts of native forest and
farmland.
The eroded remains of two old volcanic craters, beautiful Banks Peninsula stands in high re-
lief against the flat Canterbury Plains. Reached from nearby Christchurch via a long and
winding road, the main township of Akaroa and its beautiful harbour lure in hordes of holi-
daymakers and cruise-ship passengers, most of whom avail themselves of the town's wine
and food and waterside attractions. Relatively few, however, venture on foot into the hills
and down into the many tiny inlets. This is a fascinating landscape to explore, but most of it
lies beyond the fenceline of the peninsula's many farms.
