In-Depth Information
The first private walk established in NZ, the Banks Peninsula Track takes you across
private farmland and forest, and through the remote outer bays of the peninsula. The route
takes in a spectacular volcanic coastline, native bush, waterfalls and sandy beaches with two
crossings of the crater rim high above Akaroa Harbour.
Other than two steep 600m climbs, this is a leisurely tramp with short daily distances,
making it ideal for trampers wishing to take in the marvellous scenery. For the more ener-
getic, cutting the tramp to two days is an option.
History
Maori have occupied the peninsula for centuries. First came the moa hunters, followed by
the Waitaha and then the Ngati Mamoe from the North Island. In the 17th century the Ngai
Tahu landed at Parakakariki, near Otanerito Bay, and overcame the Ngati Mamoe.
