In-Depth Information
ded, with remarkable accuracy, the position of the cape. In 1941 a lighthouse was erected at
Cape Reinga. Originally sited at nearby Motuopao Island, it was one of the first in the coun-
try to be automated by electric power provided by a diesel generator, and it shines a warning
signal 49km out to sea.
Environment
Because of its isolation from mainland NZ for millions of years, Te Paki is described as an
ecological treasure trove, with many plants and animals unique to the area. Te Paki is home
to a large number of rare insects, plants and trees, including one of the world's rarest trees:
the Rata Moehau or Bartlett's rata, which once numbered only five trees in the wild. There
are impressive stands of native bush, containing giant kauri and pohutukawa trees, around
Sandy Bay, Pandora and Tapotupotu Bay.
The wildlife most trampers will encounter includes coastal birds such as oystercatchers,
NZ dotterels, pied stilts, terns, gulls and the occasional white-faced heron. A meandering
boardwalk across the Waitahora Lagoon between Kapowairua and Pandora offers trampers a
chance to enjoy a dynamic dune lake environment. The area is best known for its high num-
bers of native land snails, including many colonies of the threatened pupuharakeke (flax
snail). Make sure to pack your snorkel gear and take the plunge into crystal-clear, aquamar-
ine water teaming with life.
8 Planning
WHEN TO TRAMP
This is an excellent tramp for any time of the year. However, during summer the region has
long spells of dry weather, with temperatures hot enough to be considered almost tropical,
and a very intense sun. As there are river crossings on this tramp, you will need to check
tide times in advance at Metservice ( www.metservice.com )
WHAT TO BRING
As there are no huts on this tramp, you will need a tent. The track is exposed so ensure you
have sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt and a large-capacity water bottle.
Treat all water by either filtering or boiling it. Because of the extreme fire risk in summer,
fires are prohibited, so pack a stove.
