Getting to/from the Tramp
It's around 111km from Kaitaia to Cape Reinga. There's no scheduled bus transport along
this section of SH1, but a number of local tour companies offer drop-off and pick-up. The
key access points are Te Paki Stream and Tapotupotu Bay. The logistics are trickier from
Kapowairua as it's further off SH1.
Kaitaia-based tour operator
Harrisons Cape Runner
( 0800 227 373;
www.harrisonscapereingatours.co.nz
)
has scheduled daily tours departing 9am from Kaitaia, re-
turning by 5pm. For the price of a $50 tour you're dropped off and picked up any day you
wish, as long as there is an empty seat on the bus - outside the high season of mid-Decem-
ber to mid-January that's usually not a problem. If you want to guarantee a seat on the return
trip it's another $50. Based 13km east of Kaitaia at Ahipara,
Sand Safaris
( 09-408 1778,
0800 869 090;
www.sandsafaris.co.nz
)
also offers trailhead drop-offs as part of its $50 tour.
Olly Lancaster
( 09-409 7500)
offers on-demand transport to all trailheads including
Kapowairua for $70 per person (cheaper for more people) from his base in Paua, around
30km shy of the cape. Secure vehicle storage and basic accommodation is also available.
