Getting There & Away
TO SANTO DOMINGO
Caribe Tours ( 809-574-4796; José Duran, near Av Independencia) offers the only 1st-class bus
service to Jarabacoa. Four daily departures to Santo Domingo (RD$280, 2½ hours, at
7am, 10am, 1:30pm and 4:30pm) include a stop in La Vega (RD$80, 45 minutes).
TO LA VEGA
A guagua terminal (cnr Av Independencia & José Duran) provides frequent service to La Vega
(RD$85, 30 minutes, every 10 to 30 minutes from 7am to 6pm). If you prefer to hire a
cab, the ride costs between RD$1000 to RD$1500.
TO CONSTANZA
Públicos leave from diagonally opposite the Shell petrol station (cnr Deligne and Calle El
Carmen) at around 9am and 1pm daily (RD$60, 40 minutes). The asphalt road has made
this scenic drive a breeze as far as your car's shock absorbers are concerned; dozens of
switchbacks however will test your driving skills. Once you hit El Río, the remaining
19km passes through a lush valley.
TO LA CIÉNAGA
Públicos (RD$85, 1½ hours) leave roughly every two hours from Calle Odulio Jiménez
near Calle 16 de Agosto. The road is 42km long, of which the first 33km are mostly
paved. Returning can be a challenge, especially if returning from an afternoon hike. Hail
down any truck heading toward Jarabacoa: chances are the driver will let you hop aboard.
Getting Around
To get to outlying hotels and sights you can easily flag down a motoconcho during the
day. If you prefer a cab, try Jaroba Taxi ( 809-574-4640) next to the Caribe Tours terminal
or hail one at the corner of José Duran and Av Independencia.
There are several car-rental agencies in Jarabacoa, but we recommend that you bring a
car with you if you need one.
