The best of a string of
bars on Calle RC Tolentino, Ahi's modern open-air patio is set above street level. Most
people come to drink, but in case you miss dinner, the food is pretty good. There's live
outdoor jazz on Mondays and a sister
dance club
(karaoke Thursday nights) across the
street that attracts the young and stylish.

A diverse mix of
locals, dom-yors (Dominicans living in New York City) and even a celebrity baseball
player or two come here for serious merengue music and dancing. Set amid a series of
auto-repair shops in the Las Colinas neighborhood north of the center, you'll want to take
a cab there and back (RD$100 one way).

Shopping
Calle del Sol, the primary commercial artery in the downtown area, is lined with mostly
unremarkable clothing shops, banks, hair salons and small department stores. There is,
however, a two-story
indoor market
(btwn Calle España & Av 30 de Marzo)
worth visiting if
you're looking for souvenirs such as cigars,
mamajuana
(a mixture of herbs, dried bark,
rum, wine and honey) and rum. Directly behind this building, on several small side
streets, is a chaotic covered outdoor market, with stall after stall of secondhand clothes,
shoes and other items.
Santiago has several shopping malls, including upscale
Plaza Bella Terra
(Av Duarte;
8am-11pm)
and the older
Plaza Internacional
(Av Duarte; 8am-11pm, movie theaters 7pm-late
Mon-Fri, 4pm-late Sat & Sun)
near one another east of the Monument, and
Las Colinas Mall

anchored by the
aptly named Supermercado Jumbo. All have food courts and movie theaters showing
mostly contemporary Hollywood fare for around RD$150.
